Σε αυτό το συνέδριο συμμετέχω με την ανακοίνωσή μου «Issues in methodology of etymological lexicography: The case of Modern Greek» (Ζητήματα μεθοδολογίας τής ετυμολογικής λεξικογραφίας: Η περίπτωση της Νέας Ελληνικής).

Issues in methodology of etymological lexicography:
The case of Modern Greek

Until recently the etymological lexicography of Modern Greek (M.G.) was limited to two concise dictionaries joined by the etymological components contained in general monolingual dictionaries. The growing attention to the requirements that emerge in compilation and use of etymological dictionaries raises some major issues concerning the quality and adequacy of older works in the field.

Macrostructure
The vocabulary scope of older etymological dictionaries has been remarkably narrow. To save space, cognates, compounds and derivatives were in most cases either omitted or treated separately, leaving synchronic and diachronic interrelations out of observation. A distinctive improvement to the lexicographical approach would be the insertion of etymological fields followed by readable notes on word families.

Word dating
Older projects provide only vague information about the actual first occurrence of most lexical items, undoubtedly confronted with the following obstacles: Double-source tradition of M.G. (oral and learned) – Lack of systematic source examination of learned vocabulary – A historical dictionary of M.G., including verified and diatopic material, remains a long-awaited venture.

Morphological information
Head articles of older dictionaries offered only the minimal information, closing each lemma with an ancient Greek form appearing at the head of the chain (etymology-origin point of view). The etymologist cannot overlook fields of essential interest, such as reconstructed elements, loanwords and material that is of unknown origin.

Semantic information
Establishing continuity has resulted to the inaccurate assertion that words retain their original or classical meanings. A significant step to ensure a high level of consistency would be to set a balanced boundary between word formation and semantic description and ensure that essential semantic shifts are confirmed, referenced and contextualised.

These issues are addressed with reference to articles of M.G. etymological dictionaries and to recent developments in etymological lexicography.
